Each Wednesday I’ve been recording a Curiosity Journal to recap the previous week using these tag words: reading, playing, learning, reacting and writing.

Reading
I didn’t get much reading done this week, and I’m trying to be okay with that.Sometimes I think a Kindle tucked in my purse would allow me to make the most of unexpected free time.
Playing
One of our kids is considering a career in the medical field, so we attended an orientation meeting at a local hospital to prepare her for a day of shadowing. We sat in the conference room facing a wall decorated with press-on letters that formed titles representing a variety of medical careers. My daughter listened closely to the presentation, while I practiced proofreading skills. How many errors can you find (click on photo for larger view)?
Learning
I signed up for Pinterest.I left up one of the default boards labeled “My Style,” because I realized I don’t really have a style. Maybe, I thought, if I collect enough pictures of outfits that I kind of like, I could actually develop a style. One afternoon last week I stopped by Goodwill and found a Gap sweater with the same neck as the sweater pictured in the first photo I pinned. On another rack, a gray jacket. So I’m trying to experiment and figure out what works.
Reacting
I stuck about 1/4 cup of popcorn kernels in a small paper lunch bag, folded it shut and sort of crimped it together. Then I stuck the bag of kernels in the microwave for about three minutes, but I stopped the microwave when the popping slowed.I pulled it out.Opened the bag.Inside?Perfect popcorn. The makers and marketers of microwave popcorn should be scared. Very scared.
Writing
Writing projects: Stories for The High Calling, a brochure for a local client, and a few blog posts.

I went shopping the other day and decided I’d somehow gotten too old to wear cute clothes. Maybe I should try Goodwill. It cracks me up that you proofread the press-on words on the wall. Oh, and I copied you yesterday. I couldn’t think of anything to write so I stole your Curiosity Journal idea. It helped.

Nancy, I saw your awesome Curiosity Journal, but didn’t have time to comment–it worked really well for your personality, and I find that ideas pop into my head for each category and it’s freeing not to have to fully develop an essay-length commentary on each one; rather, just to toss out a little comment.
As for the proofreading–I was staring at the wall for almost two hours during an orientation that wasn’t even for me (I was there to sign papers because my daughter is a minor). Yawn. It was something to do. I felt it was a little rude to pull out a book and read, so I sort of pretended like I was listening, but I was really just thinking about what a dosimetrist might be and wondering why on earth someone wouldn’t be more careful about spelling when placing semi-permanent decor on the walls.

Your outfit is just perfect Ann. I love shopping at Goodwill. And the popcorn idea – brilliant! They certainly should be afraid.
I do carry my Kindle around with me. Makes my purse rather heavy, but I have something to do when my sweet husband says he just wants to stop at the new house for a “minute” to see how things are going.

Thank you, Linda! Goodwill is my first go-to store. I figure I can always start there, and if I can’t find what I’m looking for, I can go to one of the other three Goodwills within an 8-mile radius (seriously, they have gone a little crazy building Goodwills…but of course, maybe our society is giving away a ridiculous amount of stuff?) and then move on to stores like Kohls or Target. 🙂
Maybe one day I’ll try a Kindle. Should I ask for one for my birthday? Will I love it?

I found three misspellings. I had no idea technologist was a word before today though. How many did you find? Did I miss some?
annkroeker says
I found three misspellings and Physician Assistant has no apostrophe “s.” It’s just as I typed it. There may be other things I missed, though…and who knows what’s hiding behind that flip chart and TV monitor?

Your daughter should go for the medical field – there is much potential there and the pay is good, plus benefits.
At age 60 I was attending a class for Seniors returning to the work place and a representative from our local hospital came to speak to us. Now I NEVER wanted to be a nurse, but when she mentioned that in their hospital there are 200 jobs that are not nurse or doctor jobs, I listened. When she said physical therapy aid, a little bell went off inside me. I applied for and was accepted into a medical class where we learned abbreviations, and a bunch of medical stuff, and then I was accepted as an intern physical therapy aid, (work free for credit for so many hours.) Turned out I was hired and worked there for a year. Changes were made because licensed physical therapist was needed and no more aids, so four of us lost our jobs. I loved the work, but my hubby was not happy that I was working around potential germs. (Husband fear – not mine). I signed up for unemployment and after a week, I was called to the county to work in their accounting department and worked there for 10 years until I retired with a small pension.

Hazel, what an inspiring story! I love that you had those opportunities present themselves time after time.
And my daughter is pretty sure she wants to pursue the medical field, and she’s pretty sure she wants to be a nurse, but the shadowing is a way to explore this further and hopefully confirm what is the best fit. Thanks for the encouragement. I’ll pass it along.

Your Goodwill outfit is an inspiration! I love that your Curiosity Journals provide a structure for you even in a busy week. Can’t wait to hear about the shadowing.
annkroeker says
Charity, thank you for your encouragement about my fashion experiment! I also have tried to tie my scarf the way your fashion-forward sister recommended. Remember when we talked about that a while ago?

I’m debating Pinterest. I love the idea, but good gracious, I don’t need another excuse to be online! I might do it anyway;) Love your outfit.
