Many thanks to all who participated in Mega Memory Month on any level! Most MMM friends were working on memorizing a passage from the Bible, but a few chose music or poetry. My parents have always impressed me with their lifelong retention of long passages of poetry. We talked about that the other day when they were over for a visit and I was making my little MMM Celebration … [Read more...]
It's Here! The October 2008 MMM Final Celebration!
During the month of October, at least 23 participants have been working on memory challenges as part of Mega Memory Month (MMM).My hope at the start of this blog carnival had been simply to invite a few others willing to join me in this challenge so that I wouldn't be so alone. After so many participants jumped in, I found myself eager to read others' progress reports--the … [Read more...]
A TCK Election
This is certainly an election of "firsts."There are, of course, the obvious ones that have been explored in every magazine, news show and newspaper in America. But there's another that I didn't realize until, during one of the last soccer games, I was leafing through a copy of World magazine and stopped on a little sidebar (September 20/27, 2008 edition, p. 43) entitled, … [Read more...]

Friday Food Thoughts: Apples Now, Apples Later
We went apple picking this week.We love eating freshly sliced apples as a snack or with lunch. We love them dipped in caramel or Nutella for dessert. We love them just about any way they can be consumed: as applesauce, apple butter, apple pie, or apple cobbler. We love apples. So I started thinking about ways to preserve apples, because just as we discovered on our blueberry … [Read more...]

My Not-So-Mega Mega Memory Month Project
My search for a passage to memorize started with John 16:33.When I was a young girl, I went through a time when I felt like I was trapped in a disheartening situation that I couldn't escape, and many days I felt very alone. I was rather low on hope. One day I was reading the book of John, and I came to John 16:33. I stopped. I read it again. And again. It felt like a … [Read more...]

Baking Soda Soak for Stink-Removal
I have discovered that athletic tops made from manmade fabrics (the kind that "wick away moisture") can get extremely stinky after a workout.I have also, thankfully, discovered that the stinkiness can be eliminated by soaking the tops in water with baking soda.No specific measurements are needed. Just shake a pile of soda in a bucket (how big of a pile? Shrug), stick in … [Read more...]
What's in Your Memory Bank?
On a camping trip this year, I asked my brother if he's memorized anything, and he was able to recite "Jabberwocky" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," no problem. He recites something to the kids every night. My parents can recall and recite all kinds of poems all the way through.James Freeman wrote an opinion piece for the Wall Street Journal back in August that … [Read more...]
Monday's Meme-ish Musings
Having been tagged for a meme a while back by L.L. Barkat, I thought I'd tackle it today.Although I don't always jump at memes, I thought this might produce an interesting post. Maybe. She invented this particular meme, and that seems more "real" than the ones that get passed and passed around until they aren't really "fresh" anymore. So here are L.L. Barkat's rules for 5 … [Read more...]
The Parable of the Lost Nickel
As I was leaving the post office, I heard the jingling of loose change hitting the sidewalk. The lady in front of me--from whose hand or purse it must have dropped--glanced down, but didn't stop. She kept walking. I stopped.I saw a nickel and picked it up.I looked around, because it sounded like more than one had fallen, but only found the nickel.I thought about my … [Read more...]
USA: Apparently We're Awesome
The past two weeks have been full.First there's been the wonderful blessing of chaos brought on by the privilege of having some much-needed work done to our home. It was completed last week, and my main job now is to sort through clutter we unearthed in the process. I left it sitting in the family room, to force me to deal with it. For the record, I am so grateful! I … [Read more...]

Olympic Marathon Ponytails
The Boy (6yo) was in my bedroom watching the Olympics, making himself scarce while the rest of us cleaned up after dinner. He came down when he heard some discussion about ice cream sundaes."Were you watching the Olympics?" I asked."Yes.""What's on? Are they showing that Michael Phelps race again?""No. It's running. Women.""The marathon?""Yes! That's it! The … [Read more...]
